EchoSafe

Designing for Geolocated Safety Experiences
2024 Winter

EchoSafe is a geo-location-based smart safety platform designed specifically to enhance the safety of individuals traveling alone at night. By integrating smart technology, community resources, and precise geolocation tracking, EchoSafe shifts from traditional passive safety measures to a proactive approach, aiming to effectively reduce nighttime travel risks and provide scientifically sound self-rescue solutions when users face danger.

EchoSafe caters to two user groups: Guardians, community members who voluntarily join the neighborhood watch program, and Safewalkers, individuals using EchoSafe during nighttime outings. Addressing different needs across various user experience stages, EchoSafe employs a tiered safety mode system with three distinct modes—Safewalker Mode, Alert Mode, and Alarm Mode. This system forms a comprehensive design loop that spans from risk prevention to post-risk response. The platform uses geolocation and tracking technologies to connect user devices to the community network, enabling the provision of intelligent lighting and sound support based on the mode activated.

The core objective of EchoSafe is to provide a comprehensive safety solution across three key stages. Before risks occur, EchoSafe helps users identify and minimize potential dangers. During a risk event, it coordinates with community Guardians to deliver immediate and effective safety support. After a risk escalates, the system offers an efficient self-rescue plan. By combining smart devices, precise geolocation technology, and community collaboration, EchoSafe aims to create a safer nighttime environment in high-risk areas such as Blacktown.
